After publishing an open letter to Barack Obama last week, T.I. has written to Donald Trump for Rolling Stone, explaining how he sees the nation’s current cultural divide and sharing his hopes for the future of the country.
“As you transition into your role as the President of the United States, you will undoubtedly be one of the most watched people in the history of the world,” the Atlanta rapper writes at the beginning of his letter. “So, I can’t help but ask in the midst of our nation’s calamity and discord: What do you want US to see?”
T.I. then goes on to outline how black Americans have pushed arts, culture, and economy forward in the U.S. “Yet we’re shown repeatedly that our lives don’t matter as much as our dollars, let alone as that of a person of a different race or skin color,” he continues. “I’m sharing with you some of the things that separate US in hopes of creating healthy dialogue that may hopefully unite US and mend a gaping wound that has gone unattended for generations.”
At the end of the letter, T.I. shares a message of hope going forward, but asks Trump one final question before he prepares to take office: “When the stage is dark and the lights and cameras are off … Who are you? And more importantly, who do you want to be?”
